Well…it really was a good idea at the time…

So we were having a bunch of friends over for dinner. I was going to grill Caesar steak and Caesar chicken, spicy green beans and an arugula and butternut squash salad. Everytine was set up and ready to go but when I went out to start the grill, it had started snowing.

“Ha! A little snow isn’t going to stop me” I said to myself, so I rolled over one of the deck umbrellas so I wouldn’t get covered with snow. I brought out the casserole dish that had the steak and put it on the deck railing and went back in and got the chicken. The chicken was in a smaller casserole disk., and I put it on the deck railing also and turned and started to step into the house when I hear “CRASH”

Our guests came dashing in fron the other end of the house to find out what happened. I turned around and saw that the casserole dish with the chicken must have settled at an angle on the snow and slid off the railing onto the deck breaking into hundreds of pieces. I turned to our guests and said calmly

“So, no one wanted chicken, Right?”

Well I cooked the steak and the green beans and put the salad to gether and dinner was a smash. We all had a lovely evening eating and drinking and swapping storied. But like all great times, it had to come to an end eventually.

umbrella Well the next morning I get up and as I’m walking by the door to the deck, this is what I saw. (click it for a larger view) A broken umbrella leaning over the deck covered with five inches of snow. Oh yeah, I was having so much fun I forgot to take down the umbrella and it is broken but good. And to make matters worse, there is still glass on the deck under all that snow. Sigh…well It was a really good evening 🙂

(if you look close you can see the bottom of the casserole dish. It’s broken, but the top shattered!)

oooohhhh….bummer…but not as bad as our deck last week when we had the hurricane winds…We woke up to the sound of bending steel – the gazebo frame had bent and broken…and was waving it’s “legs” dangerously near the sliding glass door….6:30am and we’re out in pj’s cutting off the canopy, and taking what’s left of the frame down….sopping wet from the rain, wind blowing sideways…ugh!
